How to Motivate Yourself to Learn Roblox Scripting

If you’ve stumbled across this article, you might be considering learning Roblox scripting, but maybe you haven’t found a good reason to actually do it. Or maybe you already have some motivation, but you’re struggling to actually get yourself up and start doing it. In any case, here’s how you can motivate yourself to learn Roblox scripting.

Ask Yourself Why You Want to Learn Roblox Scripting

Start by asking yourself why you even want to learn Roblox scripting in the first place.

Is it because of money?

Is it because you saw someone script something really cool and you want to be able to script as well?

Is it because scripting may be able to turn into a programming career long-term for you?

Whatever the case may be, find your main reason to script and write it down somewhere. Make sure that your reason to script is incredibly important to you. This way, you’ll have something to hold on to during times when you find yourself in low motivation.

I wanted to script on Roblox because I saw a really cool transformation that someone made, and I wanted to be able to script that as well. In fact, at that time when I was learning scripting, I wanted to be able to script that transformation more than I wanted anything else in my lifetime.

That was my reason for learning. That’s how important it was to me.

Start by finding your reason to learn scripting and write it down.

Form a Habit to Learn Roblox Scripting

When I was 12 years old, I didn’t know it at the time, but I had developed a habit for myself that eventually ended up motivating myself to learn Roblox scripting.

During the night, from 8:00-9:00, I would browse an online scripting book and read a chapter.

During the next day, I would go into Roblox Studio and apply what I had learned.

The scripting book I used in 2016 is no longer online, but you can check out a modern version that I wrote by clicking here.

Forming Habits

A habit is really great to form, because it signals to your body when it’s time to do certain things.

For example, a lot of people have morning routines.

One such routine is: wake up, brush your teeth, and start reading a book.

A routine is essentially a sequence of steps that you follow consistently.

And a habit is just that– a routine!

So, what if you established a habit, where you consistently spend one hour learning scripting and one hour applying what you’ve learned? 2 hours every day.

Then, every single day, you’ll know when it’s time for you to learn scripting. You’ll also know when it’s time for you to apply what you’ve learned.

In this way, there is no need for motivation alone.

You’ll always know when it’s time to learn.

And what would happen if you were to make this a habit consistently?

Habit Results

Within 1 week, you’ll have invested 2*7=14 hours into your dream of learning scripting.

Within 1 month, you’ll have invested 2*30=60 hours into your dream of learning scripting.

Within 1 year? 2*365=730 hours into your dream of learning scripting.

It’s a lot of hours.

But, if you do it correctly, you will literally astound yourself.

In day 1, you might be creating parts, but by day 365? Who knows?

Combat systems, VFX systems, entire games.

The possibilities are endless.

The key is to be consistent.

Consistency over Intensity

What matters more than how intensely you learn is how consistently you are with your learning.

Who do you think will learn scripting more effectively?

Person A: Learns Roblox scripting for 12 hours every day for 5 days, and then gets burned out and stops.

Person B: Learns Roblox scripting for 2 hours every day, and spends 1 day taking a break each week.

Person B will be more effective.

Ideally, you want to signal to your brain that the act of learning scripting is fun and enjoyable. This will make it very easy for you to actually learn and build your skills.

But if you’re pressuring yourself to learn scripting and are taking away time from other things you enjoy, then you’ll eventually get burned out and you’ll never want to script again.

That’s probably not what you want.

I would love it if you were able to learn without burning out. It would be really great for you. So, remember:

Consistency > Intensity

It is more important that you show up to learn scripting as frequently as you can, even for 30 minutes, than it is for you to try to learn everything all at once.

If this whole idea of making scripting a habit resonates with you, James Clear has written an entire book, Atomic Habits, on it.

And if you feel like you want to learn a lot of different skills, but you don’t have enough time, check out my article on managing your passions.

Follow Talented Scripters

A big part of motivating yourself to learn Roblox scripting is by constantly watching other scripters practice their craft.

My X timeline is always bombarded with amazing developers making really amazing stuff.

ZetsuboWhite's Twitter post.

Here’s a recent post by ZetsuboWhite, a talented VFX modeler, who has been making really awesome stuff for many years.

If you need motivation to learn how to script, look at the posts of hard-working developers. They have been developing for so long that they are at the top of their craft.

You can be too.

It just takes consistency and hard work.

Happy learning!
