You might have stumbled across this article because you’re wondering if you should learn Roblox scripting or use free models from the Toolbox for your game.
I understand your dilemma.
Before I learned how to script on Roblox, I was also pondering the same question.
Roblox Scripting or Free Models – My Story
In 2015, I really wanted to make my own Dragon Ball Z game.
I didn’t know how to script, so I would open the Toolbox and look for assets and scripts to use.
I was most interested in making transformations for the game.
So, I would search up things like “SSJ” “SSJ2” (these are names of transformations in Dragon Ball Z).
I’d find scripts and add them into my game. Sometimes they’d work, sometimes they wouldn’t.
After a few hours of searching, I had 4 working super saiyan transformations that I was pretty satisfied with. They worked, and I was okay with them.
But then, something wild happened.
In my favorite Roblox Dragon Ball Z game, there was a hidden transformation, and the owner allowed you to try it out in a separate place.
I went to the game and had tried it out myself.
Oh man.
My transformations looked like absolute garbage compared to that!
And then, I realized the fundamental idea that life was trying to teach me:
If you want to be average, you have to do what average people do. If you want to be above average, you have to do what average people are not willing to do.
I realized that if I use someone else’s free code, my game will look like what they visioned.
But if I use my own code, my game will look like how I envision it.
Yeah.
Imagine how I felt when I realized that.
Using the Toolbox Vs Learning Roblox Scripting
If you use the toolbox to script your entire game, your game probably won’t look the way you visualize it.

Let’s say that you decided to use the toolbox to find scripts for your entire game, and you decided to continue with this for 1 year before learning Roblox scripting.
Then, after 1 year of using the toolbox, you will have learned no scripting.
That means that after 1 year of using the toolbox, you will have put in 0 hours when it comes to scripting.
But, let’s say that you decided to actually learn scripting.
Then, after 1 year of learning scripting, you will have learned a lot.
And assuming that you were putting in 2 hours every single day towards learning scripting, after that year, you will have put in 730 hours.
Then, for your next game, you can actually script your own stuff and make things much better.
Wouldn’t you agree?
You Should Learn Roblox Scripting
So, should you learn Roblox scripting or use free models?
For scripting specifically, I say ditch the toolbox and learn Roblox scripting.
You’ll be farther off that way.
I did it, and look at how far I am.
