Making a Part change color when touched in Roblox is actually very simple, believe it or not. In this article, you’ll learn exactly how to make a Part change its color when it’s touched in Roblox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, to do so, you’ll need to use a Script, as scripts allow you to tell Roblox to do stuff. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Make a Part Change Color When Touched in Roblox<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Start by downloading Roblox Studio<\/a> and making sure that you can view the Explorer<\/a> and Properties<\/a> windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1: Create a Part<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The first thing we’ll have to do is create a Part in Roblox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re using the Baseplate template, you should be seeing a screen that’s similar to this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, I’m going to remove the SpawnLocation (the small light gray block with a swirly design). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can do so by clicking on it on the Explorer and clicking the delete key on your keyboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boom! It’s gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, we have to add a Part. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To do so, you can click on the Home tab on the top of Roblox Studio and click on the Part button to add a new Part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2: Define the Part<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Now, we need to tell Roblox:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I want this Part<\/strong> to change its color when it’s touched by something.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The first part of that is “I want this Part.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We need to tell Roblox what “this part” is referring to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start by adding a new Script inside of the Part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Click on the plus button next to the Part in the Explorer and look for the word “Script” and add it in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, you should be greeted with a script that says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a line of code that Roblox scripts have by default. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We won’t need it for this tutorial, so you can delete it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, back to our main idea, we need to tell Roblox:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I want this Part<\/strong> to change its color when it’s touched by something.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

We need to tell the Script exactly what this Part<\/strong> is referring to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s actually pretty easy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember how we inserted the Script inside of the Part itself?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of this fact..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In scripting, the Part is called the Parent<\/strong> of the script, and the Script is considered to be the child<\/strong> of the Part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, since the Part is the Parent of the script, that’s the first thing we have to tell Roblox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

local part = script.Parent<\/pre><\/div>\n\n\n\n
The local myPart =<\/code> means “Let myPart be equal to” and “script.Parent” means the actual Part itself, which is the Parent of the script.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In other words, from now on in our script, myPart<\/code> is referring to the Part we added to Workspace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3: Add the Touched Event<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Now, we’re going to tell Roblox to detect when something touches it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We have to do the touched event before the color change because we only want the Part to change its color after it’s been touched by something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So, we’re going to now handle the touched by something<\/strong> part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I want this Part to change its color when it’s touched by something.<\/strong>“<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
To do this, we can use a Touched Event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
local myPart = script.Parent\n\nmyPart.Touched:Connect(function(thingThatTouchedIt)\n\t\nend)<\/pre><\/div>\n\n\n\n
This code basically says “When myPart gets Touched, connect it into a function, where thingThatTouchedIt<\/code> is going to refer to whatever object touches it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 4: Change the Part’s BrickColor<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Now, we have to change the Part’s BrickColor<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In other words, we’re now handling this part:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I want this Part to change its color<\/strong> when it’s touched by something.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
For this tutorial, let’s make the Part change its color to a random color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We can do this by changing its BrickColor<\/code> to BrickColor.Random()<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
